Virco Student Chairs

Virco Seating

Launched in 2004, the ergonomically supportive ZUMA ® line designed by Peter Glass and Bob Mills posted the highest initial-year new product sales total in the Company’s history. Recent additions to the ZUMA line include two cantilever chairs with 13” and 15” seat heights; a tablet arm chair with a compact footprint; two rockers with 13” and 15” seat heights; and a chair with an articulating tablet arm which was introduced in Virco’s 2009 Equipment for Educators™ catalog. The ZUMAfrd™ collection, introduced in 2005, features Fortified Recycled Wood™ hard plastic seats, backrests and work surfaces. ZUMAfrd products have up to 70% recycled content and are 98% recyclable. The Sage™ line, designed to serve students in college, university and other adult education settings, and on high school campuses, was introduced in late 2006. Along with its original adult-height models, Sage now offers a 13” and a 15” 4-leg chair, and a corresponding pair of cantilever chairs. In addition to these chairs for younger, smaller students, Virco has introduced an articulating Sage tablet arm model for high school and adult learning venues. Selected adult-height Sage models can also now be ordered with a padded, upholstered seat. In 2007, the Company introduced the Metaphor ® Series — an updated sequel to Virco’s best-selling Classic Series™ furniture with improvements in comfort, ergonomics, stackability, and manufacturing efficiencies — and the Telos ® Series, a wide-ranging product line with ergonomically contoured Fortified Recycled Wood components. In 2012 Virco launched the Sage Contract line for offices and reception areas, colleges, hospitality venues and other adult environments; Civitas™ chairs and stools for foodservice, libraries, media centers, circulation areas and related venues; and adjustable-height versions of 120, 121 and 122 Series stools. Other Virco seating alternatives include easily-adjustable Ph.D. ® task chairs; I.Q. ® Series classroom chairs; and comfortable, attractive Virtuoso ® chairs by Charles Perry. Classic Series™ stack chairs and Martest 21 ® hard plastic seating models are popular choices in schools across America. Along with this range of seating, Virco offers folding chairs and upholstered stack chairs, as well as additional plastic stack chairs and upholstered ergonomic chairs.

  • Suggestions are for students of average height and weight

Seat heights should be measured by calculating the distance from the floor to the top of the front curve of the seat. Measurements should not be taken at the seat’s side or rear. If at all possible, measure the heights of a representative sample of students in each grade prior to each school year. This will help you more accurately determine your specific seating needs as time goes by...ClassroomFurniture.com

    Virco Stewardship: An Ongoing Commitment

As Virco enters its 61st year, our wide-ranging Stewardship initiative continues to move forward. From popular new product introductions to industry-leading recycling efforts, Virco Stewardship encompasses a vast array of endeavors.

Virco Stewardship initiative can trace its origins to February of 1950, when we began working with America’s schools as a newly established company. Although terms like “sustainability” and “sustainable business practices” weren’t commonly used back then, they accurately describe the vision that inspired Virco’s founder, Julian Virtue, to develop long-lasting classroom furniture. As a result of our enduring commitment to product quality and customer service, Virco has grown from a small southern California business with a single customer into the country’s largest manufacturer and supplier of furniture for the K-12 market.

Another pivotal year in our Stewardship initiative’s history was 1989. That’s when our manufacturing facility in Conway, Arkansas, started its recycling and resource recovery program. Beginning with hydraulic oil, office paper and scrap metal, Virco’s corporate wide recycling efforts now include more than 40 items, ranging from plastics and wood dust to cell phones and computer hardware. Over the years, we’ve recycled more than 326,000,000 pounds of materials, and we’re still looking for new ways to remove even more items from our waste stream.

The success of our recycling activities led to the development of Virco’s “Cash for Cardboard” program in 1993. Through this community service initiative, we recycle cardboard for 35 schools in 7 districts near our Conway facility; we also build recycling bins for the schools to collect their cardboard. After Virco picks up their cardboard for processing, the proceeds are returned to the schools; to date, we’ve helped these schools earn more than $100,000 through recycling.

In 1994, we took another step forward by becoming a partner in the US Environmental Protection Agency’s WasteWise Program, which was founded to help businesses, government agencies and other organizations throughout the country evaluate and attain their recycling goals; for instance, by providing a Climate Profile, which informatively illustrates the recycling accomplishments of WasteWise partners. Nine years later, in 2003, our partnership entered a new phase when Virco was selected as one of three charter members of the WasteWise Hall of Fame.

Virco’s commitment to sustainability through recycling is mirrored in our recent new product introductions. Leading-edge furniture lines such as ZUMA®, ZUMAfrd™ and I.Q.® have received five coveted Best of NeoCon® Awards at America’s premier contract furniture trade show. We’re continually looking for new ways to incorporate sustainable design elements – including recycled and recyclable materials, ergonomic benefits and superior service life – into Virco furniture for schools, colleges, and other environments. In fact, our new Telos® and ZUMAfrd™ collections feature components made from flame-proof, colorfast, scratchresistant – and environmentally responsible – Fortified Recycled Wood™.

In 2005, ZUMA and ZUMAfrd became the first classroom furniture product lines from any manufacturer to earn GREENGUARD® indoor air quality certification through the Greenguard for Children and Schools program. And thanks to subsequent collaboration between Virco and Greenguard, hundreds of additional Virco classroom furniture models have earned this important certification. We’re proud to offer you these lowemitting products – identified in this catalog with Virco’s Greenguard certified logo – and we’re delighted that other classroom furniture manufacturers have also begun working with Greenguard. As the manufacturer of the first classroom furniture to earn Greenguard® Children & Schools certification, Virco supports the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS). The CHPS Criteria, which enable the design of high performance schools, were developed initially for California and have been adapted by Washington, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island, with other states on the way Virco is proud to be a member of CHPS.

In 2006, Virco introduced the classroom furniture industry’s first Take- Back program, which gives schools the ability to recycle furniture that’s been withdrawn from service rather than sending it to a landfill. Through our Take-Back program, Virco accepts plastic chair shells, laminated wood work surfaces and compression-molded hard plastic seats, backs and work surfaces – regardless of manufacturer – for recycling from qualifying schools, districts, colleges and universities. We can also help them find local metal recyclers to dispose of steel frames from furniture that’s no longer in use.
